Barrington police charged a 73-year-old Cranston woman with shoplifting-misdemeanor after she allegedly tried to steal eight items from Shaw's Supermarket in the Barrington Shopping Center on Friday, Nov. 30.

According to police, store employees stopped Karen F. Bernat at the self-checkout at about 12:03 p.m. Ms. Bernat had paid for three items at the checkout, but was allegedly hiding a number of other items inside her coat.

Police said Ms. Bernat had tried to shoplift a box of dryer sheets, a bottle of bleach, two packages of deli meat, a salad bowl, a $9 ham and two containers of tomato juice. The total value of items was about $70.

Police said Ms. Bernat refused to give a statement. Police issued Ms. Bernat a no trespassing order for the market.
