Dorothy Jane Maginnis Muth, 91, Barrington

Dorothy Jane Maginnis Muth passed away at Village House in Newport after a brief illness on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, at the age of 91. She was the daughter of the late J. Edward Maginnis and the late Dinah A. (Reay) Maginnis. She was preceded in death by her husband John S. Muth. She was the sister of the late E. Ann  Eberly.

Born in DuBois, Pa., she graduated from DuBois H.S. class of ’43. She graduated from the DuBois Business College and had worked at Gray Printing and at the B.F. Goodrich Co. in DuBois and for Penn State at the University Park campus. In Rhode Island, she had worked for The Rhode Island School of Design.

An avid amateur musician, she had performed with the Penn State Orchestra, was a charter member of the Barrington Symphony as well as performing with both the Barrington College and Rhode Island College Orchestras.

She is survived by two sons, John C. Muth of Riverside, and his wife Cheryl, and Richard Muth of Chesterfield Va. and his wife Michele, and her daughter Marilyn Martin of Portsmouth and her husband Paul, and five grandchildren, Tyler & Colin Muth of Virginia, Catherine & Brittany Muth  of Riverside and Micayla Martin of Portsmouth.

She was a resident of Barrington for over fifty years, she was a member of the Barrington Congregational Church and had served as a deacon and was a member of the choir. She also served in the R.I. conference of The United Church of Christ. She was a member of the Barrington Women’s Club and was active in their golf league serving as chairwoman. She had been a member of the Order of The Eastern Star.

Calling hours were on Saturday, Oct. 29, in the Smith-Mason Funeral Home 398 Willett Ave Riverside, RI  02915. She will be interred at The National Veterans’ Cemetery, Bourne, Mass., as was her husband, at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Music Committee at the Barrington Congregational Church 461 County Road, Barrington, RI 02806 or the Music Department at Rhode Island College 600 Mount Pleasant Avenue Providence, RI  02908. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
