Driver of stolen vehicle escapes on foot into Barrington neighborhood
Suspect still missing, described as white male with brown hair
A man driving a stolen car fled police early Thursday morning, Oct. 26, and disappeared on foot into a quiet Barrington neighborhood.
A Barrington Police officer was on radar post on the Wampanoag Trail at about 2:45 a.m. when he spotted a vehicle speeding in the south-bound lane. The officer followed after the vehicle — a 2013 blue Hyundai sedan — and saw it turn east onto the White Church Bridge.
Police said that the officer ordered the vehicle over to the side of the road. It eventually stopped on Massasoit Avenue near the intersection with Wamsutta Avenue.
According to police, the officer checked the license plate of the blue sedan and discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Lincoln a week earlier, on Oct. 19.
Police said the officer stepped out of the cruiser and approached the sedan on foot. As he neared the vehicle, the driver of the stolen car hit the accelerator and sped away down Massasoit Avenue.
Police said the stolen vehicle was out of view by the time the officer was able to get back in his cruiser and pursue it.
While the first officer continued down Massasoit Avenue and onto New Meadow Road, a second Barrington Police officer who responded as backup spotted the stolen vehicle — it had crashed into the front yard of a home on Massasoit Avenue, just past the intersection with Plymouth Drive.
Police said that officer called for EMTs to respond to the scene, and as the officer walked up to the stolen sedan he realized the driver had fled on foot.
Barrington Police then began searching for the driver of the stolen vehicle. Barrington Police called Warren and Providence Police Departments for assistance; Providence sent a K9 unit to help with the search,
For more than two hours police searched the quiet Hampden Meadows neighborhood, but were unable to locate the suspect. Police described the suspect as a white male with brown hair.
Police towed the stolen vehicle back to the state and are conducting a thorough search of the car for any evidence that may help with the investigation.
