Duarte leads East Providence contingent at Eastern track meets

PORTSMOUTH — The East Providence High School boys' and girls' outdoor track and field teams finished third and fourth, respectively, in their Eastern Division Championship Meets held last week at Portsmouth's John F. Kennedy Field.

Alejandro Duarte was the outstanding performer among the Townie athletes winning a pair of individual events for the EPHS boys' team and also running a leg for the locals on their winning 4x100 meter relay squad.

The Townies compiled 38 points in the girls' meet, which was dominated by Barrington. The Eagles literally ran away with the Eastern crown, earning 232 points. Portsmouth was second with 124 and Bay View third with 60.

More boys' results
Duarte led the Townies, who vied for the top spot in the team standings for most of the meet, to third place with a total of 120 points. Barrington won the Eastern title with 158 points followed by Rogers with 147.

In the field, Duarte won the high jump, covering 20 feet, seven inches. On the track, he clocked a winning time of 52.2 seconds in the 400 meters. Duarte, David Ogunronbi, Clinton Ogunronbi and Jayden Chase won the 4x1 in 44.3.

Chase was another of the individual winners for the locals, claiming the 100 dash in 11 second. Duarte ran second in 11.1. David Ogunronbi was fourth in 11.5.

C.J. Hazzard added the other solo win for the Townies, clocking a 15.1 in the 110 meter high hurdles. He was also fifth in the 300 intermediate hurdles, running a 49.9. Colt Nichols of Portsmouth won the event in 41.7.

Tommy Lopes added a second on attempts for E.P. by clearing 5'8" in the high jump. David Ogunronbi shared third, also clearing 5'8." Ogunronbi was also second in the 200 in 23.4, an event won by Rogers' Devon Campbell in 22.9. Chase was fifth in 25.7.

Chris Santos was fifth in the 400 behind Duarte, running a 55.7. The Townies' Dan DeLuca was also fifth in the 800 in 2:07.4. Barrington's Mars Bishop won the race in 2:02.4.

Alex Gorman chipped in s second (9:41.3) in the 3,000 and a third in the 1,500 (4:19.3). Barrington's Bishop also won both events in 9:37.9 and 4:15.2, respectively.

In the other relays, Jordan Amado, DeLuca, Jon Braga and Colby Amaral combined to place second (9:00) in the 4x8 won by Barrington in 8:45.5. The Eagles also won the 4x4 in 3:39.7. The E.P. team of Santos, Gorman, DeLuca and Aaron Amaral was third in 3:47.1.

More girls' results
Hasna Badji and Haley Teodoro paced East Providence, each earning 10 points individually in winning the 100 hurdles and the high jump. Badji ran a 17.1 to pace the rest in the hurdles while Teodoro cleared 5'1" in the high jump. Badji was also third in the 300 hurdles, running a 51.9. Bay View's Olivia Granatiero won the event in 50.7.

The other points for the Townies came from Shaniah Hazard's fourth place throw in the javelin (89') and her same finish in the 400 (1:06). E.P.'s relay teams added a sixth (4x1, 58.7) and a fifth (4x4, 4:50).

Class meets
Both EPHS entries next compete in their respective Class A Championship Meets scheduled for Saturday, May 21, at Coventry High School. The boys' meet starts at 10 a.m. followed by the girls' at 2 p.m.
