Lexi Greffen scored 34 points for the Portsmouth High School girls basketball team, but it was not enough as three Barrington players finished in double-figures and helped the Eagles defeat the Patriots 64-54 in a first round game in the State Championship Tournament on Wednesday night, March 6.

Greffen knocked down seven 3-pointers en route to her 34-point performance for the Patriots, while her teammate Gabrielle Schenck scored 11.

Meanwhile, Olivia Middleton, Grace Ceseretti and Alex Marinelli each finished in double figures for the Eagles — Middleton scored 17, while Ceseretti had 15 and Marinelli added 13. Barrington's Cary Heterick scored nine and Elizabeth McConaghy added six.

The Patriots and Eagles were locked at 26-26 at halftime, but Barrington pulled away in the second half.

Portsmouth entered the State Championship Tournament as the 13th seed, having reached the second round of the Division I tournament before losing to South Kingstown. The Eagles, the fourth-seeded team in the state tournament, lost an opening round game in the Division I tourney.

With the victory over the Patriots, Barrington advances to a quarterfinal round game against Scituate on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be played at Rhode Island College.

Fifth-seeded Scituate, which finished 15-2 in Division II during the regular season, defeated Middletown 47-42 in a first round game of the State Championship Tournament.
