The Barrington High School boys tennis team came up just shy of capturing the Division I state championship, losing to Hendricken, 4-2, in the finals on Saturday.
Barrington, which finished the regular season with a 15-1 record, reached the finals by defeating defending state champs South Kingstown in the semifinals.
Against Hendricken, Barrington freshman Eric Zhang won his match at second singles, and the third doubles team of Kevin Zhu and Lucas Johnson also won their match. The finals were played at Slater Park in Pawtucket.
Barrington's lone loss of the regular season came against Hendricken on April 23, but the Eagles were able to avenge that loss in the final match of the regular season, defeating the Hawks 4-3 on May 23.
Semifinals
The Barrington High School boys tennis team defeated defending state champions South Kingstown, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon in the Division I state semifinals.
The Eagles won all four singles matches against the Rebels. James Bogdanovic won his match at first singles, 6-1, 6-2; Eric Zhang won at second singles, 6-2, 6-0; Owen Voigt won at third singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Alex Caizzi won at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4.
Individual tournament
In the Individual State Singles Tournament the previous weekend, unseeded Eric Zhang reached the semifinals while teammates, James Bogdanovic and Owen Voigt were defeated in the round of 16, in tough three-setters.
The Eagles were led this season by head coach Marvin Gordon and assistant coach Betsy Brenner.
Senior Co-Captains Conor McGartoll and Sam Jurgeleit, contributed significantly to the team's success this season also. And with three freshmen in the singles lineup, as well as two juniors and several sophomores contributing multiple wins this season, the future appears bright for the Eagles.
