Eagles one win away from hockey state title

Barrington boys' skate past Rogers/Middletown/Rocky Hill 5-2 in first game

The Barrington High School boys' hockey team has the opportunity to capture the Division II state championship tonight.

The Eagles skated to a 5-2 win over the Rogers/Middletown/Rocky Hill co-op team in the series opener on Thursday night, paced by a strong first period. Barrington's Josh Roy opened the scoring with a goal at the 3:10 mark. Dominic Robidoux and Jonathan Fay assisted on the goal. A few minutes later Robidoux scored Barrington's second goal on an assist by Fay.

The two-goal lead put Barrington in command heading into the second period.

The Rogers/Middletown/Rocky Hill cut narrowed the margin with a quick goal, but Barrington responded with two more scores. Robidoux scored off assists from Roy and Drew Sirmalis, and then Timothy Hall made it 4-1 in Barrington's favor when he scored off assists from Michael Grieve and Luke Rudman.

Kyle Shuman scored Barrington's final goal of the game late in the second period. Nicholas Bernardo and Hall notched the assists.

The puck drops on game two of the series tonight, March 17, at 6 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium.
