The Barrington High School boys outdoor track team dominated in its first meet of the regular season, defeating Tiverton, Shea, Tolman and East Providence High Schools this past Monday, April 1.
Barrington freshman Holden Vaughan started off the distance team with his virtually uncontested win in the 3,000-meter, defeating second-place finisher and fellow teammate CJ Hilty by nearly 30 seconds with his time of 10:09.5.
The 1,500 went similarly, as junior Ethan Major appeared at ease as he crossed the finish line with his winning time of 5:03.1. The battle, however, was in the 800, as Vaughan narrowly defeated both Jamie Gunness and Major, beating out Gunness by just .3 seconds with a winning time of 2:26.3.
Barrington’s 4x400 relay team — comprised of Vaughan, Gunness, Jay Scheieffelin and Will Sanchez — held the winning time of 4:09.6. Gunness and Scheieffelin faced off in the 400 as well, with Gunness barely clinching the top spot by a .1 margin with his time of 55.7.
Out on the field, both William Cauley and Matteo Lopergolo fared well, alternating between first and second in a number of the events. Cauley claimed first in hammer with a 177-feet, 7-inch distance, shotput with a 39-feet, 8.75-inches, and discus with a 108-feet, 3-inches, while Lopergolo was able to come out on top javelin for his team with a throw of 123-feet, 5-inches.
Will Sanchez was Barrington’s best for the jumping events, clinching the top slot amidst his teammates in both the long jump (18-feet, 10-inches) and triple jump (38-feet, 7-inches).
By the end of the long, cold day, the Eagles had defeated Tiverton 109-19; East Providence 99-54; Tolman 143-3 and Shea 125-24.
Barrington will next battle in this Saturday’s invitational, beginning at 9 a.m. at Conley Stadium.
