Eagles skate to 3-2 victory against LaSalle

East Bay co-op girls open season with 2-0 record

The East Bay Co-op girls ice hockey team turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory against LaSalle Academy on Saturday night, Dec. 8.

LaSalle opened up a 2-0 lead against the Eagles and held that margin into the second period. It appeared that the Rams might even go up 3-0, when one of the LaSalle players broke away for a clean shot at the East Bay net, but Eagles goalie Ellee Kopecky made a great save.

The stellar defensive effort sparked East Bay's offense and a few minutes later the Eagles netted their first goal of the game. Maddie Cox blasted a shot at the LaSalle goal and Katherine Barker tipped the puck past the goalie. The same two players combined for East Bay's second goal a few moments later.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the third period, Cox gave East Bay its next scoring chance. The senior got a break-away but the Rams' goalie made a nice save. A few minutes later Cox responded with another breakaway shot, and while the Rams' goalie was again able to make the save, East Bay's Maeve Harrington was there to scoop up the loose puck and push it into the LaSalle net.

First-year East Bay coach Michael Cox said he was very happy with his team's effort.

On Friday night, East Bay skated to a 5-0 victory over Narragansett. Barker finished the game with a hat-trick, scoring three goals and notching one assist. Cox scored twice and had two assists. Ella Hanley also finished the game with an assist. Kopecky made fives and first-time player Zoey Despines finished the game with one save.

The East Bay Eagles will be back on the ice Thursday night against Warwick Co-op. The game will be played at 6 p.m. at the Portsmouth Abbey rink.
