East Bay co-op girls split, boys lose in hockey's return from break

The struggles for the East Providence/Mt. Hope boys' hockey co-op, the East Bay Huskies, continued upon its return to Division II-B action last weekend from the holiday recess.

The Huskies suffered a 10-1 loss to the Narragansett/Chariho co-op at the Portsmouth Abbey Rink in Portsmouth Saturday night, Jan. 6. Freshman defenseman Jackson Stringer scored East Bay’s lone goal assisted by Nate Carpenter.

The loss dropped the Huskies record to 1-5-0 in the league. Goaltender Kayden Carney made 30 saves.

Meanwhile, the East Bay Eagles girls' hockey team, a co-op including players from East Providence High School and Providence Country Day, split a pair of Interscholastic League games this past weekend in its return from the break.

The locals lost to the Burrillville/Ponaganset/Bay View/North Smithfield co-op 8-2, then beat the Cranston/East Greenwich/Scituate co-op 11-5. The Eagles saw their record move to 2-3-0 for the winter.

Mia Phelps had a goal and an assist in the the loss. Clara Bucher had the helper on her mate's tally.

Phelps also had a hat-trick in East Bay's victory. Arden Wilkes did her one better with four goals. East Providence's Sydney Olson potted a pair and helped on two others. Ruby Turgeon had a goal and an assist as did Addyson Whittet.

Margaux Boneu had three helpers while Cayden MacQueston, Eleni Drosnios, Bucher and Providence Country Day’s Charlotte Pudloski had one each. Nadia Albritton was credited with 21 saves in the East Bay net.

Team schedules for this weekend are as follows:

Girls' hockey: Friday, Jan. 12, East Bay vs. South County, Boss Arena, URI, 6:30 p.m.

Boys' hockey: Sunday, Jan. 14, East Bay vs. Rogers co-op, Portsmouth Abbey, 3:30 p.m.; Monday, Jan. 15, East Bay vs. Ponaganset, Portsmouth Abbey, 11 a.m.
