EAST PROVIDENCE — As part of its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night, Oct. 20, the East Providence City Council gave its approval to annual alcoholic beverage renewals for businesses, including the controversial East Bay Tavern located on Lyon Avenue.

Though approving the license to serve alcohol, several members of the Council expressed their continued concerns with East Bay Tavern. The city and the business have been at odds for nearly two years. Most recently, the owners of the establishment, DL Enterprises, won a stay with the state Department of Business Regulation against a revocation order issued by the Council. The city appealed the decision and the matter remains in litigation.

City Solicitor Tim Chapman recommended the Council approve the Tavern's license until the matter has run its legal course. "Until that time, there's nothing you can do but to renew," Mr. Chapman told the members.

The body did, but not without comment.

"There have been a number of incidents there, violence. I'm very uncomfortable renewing the license for DL Enterprises," said Ward 4 Councilman Tim Conley, a viewed echoed by At-Large Councilwoman Tracy Capobianco simultaneously.

Added Council President and Mayor, Ward 2's Tommy Rose in a similarly negative tone, "This establishment is an on-going issue."
