Townies throttle Woonsocket, stay unbeaten in Division III

EAST PROVIDENCE — Dominant, overwhelming, one-sided, choose the adjective and it likely was an apt description of East Providence High School's 8-0 victory over visiting Woonsocket Thursday afternoon, Sept. 22, in a Division III girls' soccer game played on the new Bayside FC pitch in city.

Grace Abrams netted a hat-trick in the first half hour of the contest as the Townies upped their unbeaten record to 4-0-0 to start the season. The previous afternoon, East Providence defeated Tolman, 5-1. To date, the Townies have outscored their four league opponents, 25-3.

"The teamwork on the field, the girls played well. They were able put the ball where they needed to. They recognized the opportunities and they took advantage of them. We do need to improve on our shot selection and our finishing," said EPHS head coach Angelo Pizzi said after Thursday's victory.

Abrams' third tally gave the locals a 6-0 lead at the time. She actually opened the scoring with a goal in the first minute. Abrams then had a chance in the 10th minute, her shot breaking through the Villa Novan's keeper and onto the foot of E.P.'s Sydney Vilardi for the easy rebound goal.

The Townies went up 3-0 in the 15th minute when Alyssa DeOliveira curled in a nifty shot from about 12 yards out off a pass from Michaela Doro. Abrams' second goal in the 21st minute made it 4-0. The junior striker next added her second assist of the game with a feed to Jade Braxton in the 25th. Doro then capped the first-half scoring with a goal in the 33rd minute to make it 7-0.

Believe it or not, the Townies could have led by nearly double what they actually did at the break. That's how many other legitimate looks at net they had. E.P. was never seriously challenged. The locals completely controlled possession, moving and holding the ball at will. Only a couple of times were the hosts tested, and that's just because they were caught too far up the field on the attack.

"It's just hard. We want to play competitive and we want to win, but we also want to show sportsmanship, play sportsmanlike," said Vilardi, one of the Townies' three senior co-captains along with Julia Andrade and Arianna Colouro. "But we also want to be challenged, so we're looking forward to being challenged later in the season."

Haley Placido accounted for the final score of the game, netting a goal in the 56th minute. Rachel Oliveira and Paige Chakouian split time in the E.P. net evenly. Oliveira faced a handful of shots in the first half and was also aided by a pair of near Woonsocket misses on odd-man situations while Chakouian didn't need to make a save in the second half.

Abrams also scored twice while Vilardi, Lily Palumbo and Aaliyah Pattie accounted for the other goals in the Townies' victory over Tolman in Pawtucket September 21. Oliveira made eight saves and Chakouian two. Coach Pizzi also noted the efforts of his defensive back four: Calouro, Lindsay Amaral, Amber Drainville and DeOliveira.

E.P. is back in action Monday, Sept. 26, when the Townies host Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy at 7 p.m.
