East Providence earns important football win

CRANSTON — The East Providence High School football team picked up a win it very much needed to keep its Division I playoff hopes alive as the Townies defeated host Cranston East, 20-14, Friday night, Oct. 23, at Cranston Stadium.

The Townies' touchdowns came on a one-yard quarterback keeper by Ryan Ellinwood in the first quarter, a 30-yard run by Jayden Chase in the third period and the winning score in the fourth quarter via a 35-yard scamper by Tommy Lopes.

"We played really hard and came together as a team," said EPHS head coach Jay Monteiro. "I'm really proud of my guys."

E.P. improved to 3-3 with the victory, keeping pace in the race for either the third or fourth of the four playoff spots available at the end of the regular season.

Also of note Friday, previously unbeaten South Kingstown lost to likewise unbeaten LaSalle, 41-7. The Rams improved to 5-0 with the win.

The Townies host S.K. (4-1) in another game with significant playoff implications Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 o'clock at Pierce Stadium.
