PAWTUCKET — The East Providence High School girls' tennis team continued its superb season into the Division III playoffs as the Townies defeated Scituate, 4-0, in the opening round of the league championship tournament Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Pawtucket's Slater Park.

E.P., the top seed from III-A after going 15-1 during the regular season, earned the first point of the match after its No. 1 doubles team of Meg Amore and Tess Lyons won in straight sets over their opponents from Scituate, the fourth seed from III-B. Mary McBride followed with a win at fourth singles then in quick succession the No. 2 tandem of Rachel LaValley-Jessica Costello and No. 3 singles Lillian Conti each also added straight-sets victories. In progress matches involving singles players Tess Amore and Victoria Luchi and the No. 3 doubles team of Emily Ramsey-Madison Turner were ended as soon as the Townies earned the deciding fourth point overall.

East Providence advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 25, opposite Cranston East at Lincoln High School at 5 p.m. The Thunderbolts, whom the Townies beat twice during the regular season, edged North Providence, 4-3, in their quarterfinal. The win for Cranston East, the third seed out of III-A with a 12-4 record, was considered a mild upset as North Providence finished second in III-B with a 14-2 mark. Classical won III-B with a perfect 16-0 mark. The Purple is on the other side of the draw along with 15-1 Middletown, the second seed behind the Townies in III-A.

The league championship match is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m. back at Slater Park.
