East Providence High School inducts six into Hall of Fame

SWANSEA — East Providence High School conducted its 32nd annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Venus de Milo Restaurant where six notable members of the community were enshrined.

Harry Mutter, EPHS Class of 1962, Henry Moniz, Class of 1963, Raymond Lombardo, Class of 1967, Gregory Dias, Class of 1975 and Michaela Johnson, Class of 2006, were the alumni inducted while long-time EPHS teacher and coach David Shadrick received an honorary enshrinement.

Mr. Dias is an accomplished attorney, who currently serves as one of East Providence's assistant city solicitors. He is currently chairman of the Rhode Island Court Bench Bar Committee. He is a past recipient of the Rhode Island Bar Association Public Access to Justice Pro Bono Publico Award. Active in the community, Mr. Dias is a board member for the Friends of Townie Athletics organization as well as the East Bay Community Action program and the K-Rob Foundation among other endeavors.

Ms. Johnson was a three-sport athlete to the girls' soccer, basketball and softball teams during his time at EPHS. She later continued her basketball career at Bridgewater State University, where she was a four-year letterwoman and captain her senior year. Ms. Johnson initially won a search contest for a spot on the morning WPRI/Fox Providence "Road Show" before establishing herself as one of the main hosts along with another city native, Will Gilbert. Ms. Johnson has lent her name to numerous charitable efforts, including several in city.

Mr. Lombardo was a four-sport athlete and student council member while he attended EPHS. He was a captain of the Townies during an undefeated run to the football state championship and was both an All-State and All-New England wrestler. He later added All-Yankee Conference honors on the mat while attending the University of Rhode Island on a wrestling scholarship. He became a Math and English teacher, returning to East Providence where he served as a House Leader and assistant principal at Martin Middle School. He was also an assistant principal at EPHS.

Mr. Moniz was both an honor student and standout football player during his days at EPHS. A veteran of the Vietnam War as a member of Marines, he served for four years before returning to Rhode Island where he became the first trooper of African-American decent in 1969. He then embarked on a decorated and noteworthy 35-year career in law enforcement at both the state and federal levels. A recipient of numerous awards, Mr. Moniz concluded his career as a special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) working out of the Boston office.

Mr. Mutter spent much of his professional career working in the School Department, including as Director of Buildings and Grounds. He is a board member for the Heritage Days Committee and East Providence Community & Teachers Credit Union. At EPHS his was a member of the Townies' state championship basketball team in 1962. He was also a second team All-State selection in baseball. Mr. Mutter went on to become one of the better men's league softball players in the state throughout the 1970s. He is currently the public address announcer for EPHS football games and serves at the scorer's table for Townie indoor sports events.

Mr. Shadrick taught in the East Providence School System for 35, including as a House Leader at Martin Junior High School, now Martin Middle School, and his final position as a teacher and History Department chairman at EPHS. Mr. Shadrick enjoyed successful stints as baseball coach at Martin, where his teams won six division championships and at EPHS for boys' tennis, where his Townies won five division championships and one state title. Mr. Shadrick remains an active volunteer, including with the Friends of Townie Athletes and the Scholarship Foundation of East Providence.

Selection to the EPHS Hall of Fame is based on the following criteria: job-related achievements; professional honors and awards; civic or community involvement; extraordinary contribution to society; positive impact on the East Providence community; exceptional and documented individual athletic accomplishment(s) during one’s high school, college or beyond; exceptional dedication as a staff member to the students of East Providence High School for a minimum of 10 years with a significant and direct impact on students and the community; other appropriate qualifications which the committee believes merit consideration.
