East Providence High School's Salgueiro receives wrestling coach award

Is honored as assistant of the year

EAST PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island High School Wrestling Coaches Association has selected East Providence High School's Glen Salgueiro as the Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2015-16 season.

Salgueiro, a school alum and former wrestler, is the long-time aid to EPHS varsity head coach Tom Galligan. He received the award during the annual coaches' banquet held Tuesday night, April 5, at Wright's Farm Restaurant in Harrisville.

"I think this is well deserved and long overdue. Sometimes good coaches get overlooked when they have success. People don't see all the little things coaches do, especially a guy like Sal," Galligan said of Salgueiro, who has been his "No. 2" for 21 years.

Galligan and Salqueiro guided the Townies to their best performance since missing out on the title by a mere half point 10 years ago as E.P. placed second to champion Bishop Hendricken at the 2015-16 state meet held this winter at the Providence Career and Tech Academy Field House.

The Townies, sparked by the weight class-winning efforts of Christian Hussey and Mario Peoples, tallied 176.5 points over the two-day event while the Hawks earned 226.5 points en route to claiming their third state title in as many years.

In addition to his duties at EPHS, Salgueiro, a teacher at Martin Middle School, also served as head coach of the Riverside Middle School wrestling team this year when a suitable replacement wasn't found to fill a vacancy.

"Sal goes above and beyond, you saw that this year with what he did at Riverside to go along with helping out with the varsity," Galligan added. "He does so many things for the kids, little things that no one ever sees. He gives them rides, buys them food, helps them out wherever he can. He really cares about them. He's just dedicated to the kids and the program. I'm glad he finally got the recognition."
