East Providence Police arrest suspect in A'Vant murder case

EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence Police Wednesday, July 8, announced the arrest of a Providence man in connection with the August 2014 murder of city resident and businessman Yusef A'Vant.

Thomas Mosley Jr., 33, of 15 Princeton Ave., was arrested by EPPD officers at approximately 7 p.m. Tuesday evening, July 7, on Broad Street in Providence. He was taken into custody on an arrest warrant issued to EPPD earlier the same day.

Mr. Mosley was set to be arraigned in Sixth District Court Wednesday afternoon.

"Hopefully this arrest will bring some closure to the family and friends of Yusef A'vant," EPPD Chief Chris Parella said Wednesday. "Since the day of the shooting, this case has been a top priority for the East Providence Police Department and it will remain in effect until the prosecutorial aspect is brought to a conclusion."

On August 13 of last year, Mr. Mosley is alleged to have entered Mr. A'vant's place of business on Pawtucket Avenue, “Krazy Kuts” barbershop and salon, and fired at least one gun shot. According to eyewitnesses at the time of the shooting, the suspect fled the scene by car, heading to Interstate 195 just down the road. Mr. A'Vant, a 42-year-old father, died as a result of his wounds.

In the ensuing days, police released a sketch artist's rendering of the suspect, presumed now to be Mr. Mosley. East Providence Police worked in concert with their counterparts from Providence and the State Police in working the case for the last 11 months.

"I want to acknowledge the invaluable assistance we received from the investigative division of Providence Police Department and the Rhode Island State Police," Chief Parella said. "The synergy between all involved was instrumental in making this arrest."

The chief declined to discuss the possible motive in the case. He did acknowledge the weapon used was a handgun, but would not specify the make, model or caliber.

"I'm not going to get into specifics in terms of motive. It's too early," Chief Parella said.
