East Providence Police conduct annual memorial service

Event honors those who sacrificed for the profession

Posted

The East Providence Police Department conducted its annual memorial service on Thursday evening, May 19, at its headquarters, the Major Alister McGregor Public Safety Complex.

The event continues a tradition, the origins of which date back to 1962, when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as Police Week.

The EPPD headquarters, in fact, is dedicated in the honor of one of its fallen members, Major McGregor, who was tragically shot and killed by a fellow officer while conducting a training exercise in 2001.

East Providence Post and eastbayri.com staff photographer Rich Dionne chronicled the memorial in the accompanying gallery.
