East Providence solidifies boys' soccer playoff position

RICHMOND — The East Providence High School boys' soccer team solidified its hold on one of the final remaining spots in the upcoming Division I state championship playoffs as the Townies defeated host Chariho, 2-1, Friday night, Oct. 23.

All of the scoring occurred in the second half, including goals by Brandon Costa and Dan DeLuca for the Townies. Nathan Silveira made eight saves in the E.P. net. Costa's tally with seven minutes left in the contest proved to be the winner.

"We're really starting to play well right now, especially our seniors and Brandon has really come through for us," said EPHS head coach Raunisio Oliveira. "Right now, the kids are really excited. The game was really intense. After Brandon scored our guys were just pumped. They knew what was in front of them."

The Townies improved to 4-5-3 and with 15 points in the D-I standings, good for a tie in points with Barrington (3-5-6) and Central (4-6-3) for eighth place. Barrington has played its full complement of 14 league games. Central has one game remaining against Shea (7-3-3).

E.P., barring some unexpected results from the teams below in the league table, all but locked up a postseason berth with Friday's win.

"I told the guys going into the Hope game (a 3-1 win October 22) that we needed to win that one. I also told them we take it one game at a time, but if we won the Chariho game we definitely would get in there," Coach Oliveira added.

Twelve of the 15 teams in the league qualify for the playoffs. And with only two games remaining for most teams in the regular season, the Townies are in seemingly solid position to qualify for the state tournament.

East Providence finishes its league slate with back-to-back home games Monday and Tuesday nights, Oct. 26 and 27, at Pierce Stadium against North Kingstown (6-1-5) at 6 p.m. and then Senior Night against unbeaten first-place LaSalle (12-0-0) at 7 p.m.

With playoff qualification almost a foregone conclusion, the Townies will likely open the postseason on Thursday, Oct. 29.
