EAST PROVIDENCE — The Riverside Post 10 American Legion Baseball Junior Division team suffered its first loss of the summer Tuesday night, July 28, in the winners' bracket portion of the state tournament. Post 10, the top seed, fell to second-seeded South Kingstown Post 39 by a 3-0 count.

Riverside (20-1) remains alive in the double-elimination tourney, facing third-seeded Auburn Post 20 of Cranston Wednesday afternoon, July 29, at 3 p.m. at Bishop Hendricken in Warwick.

A win Wednesday would place Post 10 in the championship round of the state tourney at West Warwick's McCarthy Stadium July 30 and 31. Just as important, it would guarantee the locals a berth in the Northeast Regional tourney scheduled for next week at LaSalle Academy in Providence.The Rumford Little League Junior League All Stars advanced to the championship round of the Rhode Island State Tournament with a 4-3 victory over District 1 champion Elmwood Monday night, July 27, in Cumberland.

Ben Kaihler was the winning pitcher for the localsHe threw 94 pitches in six-plus innings. Colby Paiva threw five pitches to earn the save. The locals scored the winning tally in a two-run fifth inning. Nathan Bettencourt and Paiva, who both singled, crossed home for Rumford in the frame. Matt Pimental and Zach White scored the other runs for the locals.

The District 2 champs awaited the winner of the Elmwood-Chairho in the championship round of the tournament Friday night, July 31, back at Cumberland's Bentley Field. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m. Elmwood and Chariho, the District 3 champ, were scheduled to meet in the losers' bracket final on Wednesday, July 29.

In other Rumford news, the District 2 champion 10-11 Major Baseball Division champs opened their state tournament at Hein Field in Lincoln July 29 against District 4 champ Burrillville. Either way, win or lose, the locals will play back at Hein on Thursday, July 30. Win and game time is 8 p.m., lose and it's 6.

The tournament continues August 1 and 2 with 6 p.m. games. A final game to decide the state champ if necessary would take place August 3 at 7 p.m. The other representatives in the field include District 1 champ Cranston Western and District 3 champ Warwick North.
