East Providence’s Davis embarks on 4-K Mile Cross-Country Bike Ride

Two month journey starts in Oregon, ends in Providence

EAST PROVIDENCE — City resident Judy Davis has a “zest for life.” She is a driven individual who challenges herself to better the community. Ms. Davis attempts to her community in numerous ways. When she isn’t working at her Law Office of Judy Davis, LLC, she volunteers her time at the Boys and Girls Club of Providence (BGCP).

A lifelong athlete, Ms. Davis participated in numerous sports including little league, swimming, basketball, soccer, and lacrosse in high school and college. Presently she enjoys running, biking, and skiing.

Ms. Davis continues her passion for athletics by contributing to the master’s swimmers club at the boys’ and girls’ association. This week, she will embark on a 4,000-mile cross-country bike ride to raise funds for BGCP to establish an aquatics endowment.

Already raising over $40,000, Ms. Davis hopes to reach the goal of $100,000. This trek will start in Florence, Oregon as she heads east through Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, around the lakes, and New York State. Her journey will end in Providence around late August.

Ms. Davis is embarking on this odyssey to benefit the community. After spending the past few years swimming at BGCP master’s program, she recognized that drowning remains the leading cause of death for children five and under.

By raising money for the organization, she wants to help BGCP offer a swim program which will provide swim lesson scholarships to young swimmers. During her trek, BGCP will be holding a six-week program which will incorporate various elements into learning opportunities and bike safety workshops.

Ms. Davis hopes to “see the kids in the program interact with her during her cross-country bike ride throughout the summer program.” To ensure this, the children of BGCP will participate in geography lessons. Members of the club will receive “passport” stamps to follow Judy’s progress and lessons about landmarks like the Lewis and Clark historic trail and the Erie Canal that are on Judy’s route. BGCP will also combine math lessons such as challenging youth to determine how many times they need to bike around a track to equal the miles that she is traveling on their behalf. Ms. Davis will also Skype with members and staff to engage in her cross-country journey.

On a personal level, her older sister was among the first members to swim locally at the BGCP. Her sister was an inspiration to her in creating a family legacy in swimming. Judy wants to pass this legacy on to club members while being a role model to youth and demonstrating they can do anything they put their minds to. During this cross-country bike ride, Ms. Davis “Just wants to do it. She has never done anything like this before.”

Ms. Davis described her personal mission during this ride, “A lot of people would describe me as driven. The challenges I set out for have started getting larger. I had this idea a year ago, it took me a year to plan and get going, but with the motivation, you can achieve it.” Ms. Davis is “passionate about learning new things, weaving in experiences in her blog and talking about life, history and the future.”

During her trek, she “hopes to see the country and meet new people.” Ms. Davis believes that raising money for the BGCP aquatic endowment will provide the assistance needed.
