Edwards bill — no more jack and spare?

Posted

The House of Representatives has passed legislation introduced by Majority Whip John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Portsmouth, Tiverton) that would update the law to allow for self-sealing tire technology in automobiles.

Rhode Island law now mandates that all automobiles sold in the state must be equipped with a jack and a spare tire or a factory-installed repair and inflation system.

The legislation (2018-H 7123A) would permit automobiles equipped with self-sealing tires or other technological improvements, consistent with federal motor vehicle safety standards, to be sold as well.

“Rhode Island is the only state in the country that has a law mandating spare tires,” said Representative Edwards. “Now that cars with self-sealing tires are becoming commercially available, we need to update the law to accommodate the new technology. This is good pro-business legislation that will help car dealerships by eliminating an unnecessary requirement.”
