Elsie R. Manchester (Rego-Sousa), age 94, went home to be with The Lord on Wednesday, August 30, 2017. She was the wife of the late Norman A. Manchester, Sr.

Born in Bristol, RI, one of 12 children, a daughter of the late Joseph and the late Evangeline (Perry) Rego-Sousa, she was a lifelong resident of Touisset.

Elsie was a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church since its inception. She was a volunteer for 18 years at Grace Barker Nursing Home with her sister-in-law, Laura Brown. A phenomenal cook, she also enjoyed gardening and making her famous “Nana’s” elderberry jam. Above all else, Elsie loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her son, Norman A. Manchester, Jr.; daughters, Sandra Davock (William) and Faith Francis (Jeffrey); brother, John Sousa; sister, Evangeline Avila; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Joseph, Jesse, Manuel, Frank and Evangeline Sousa, Mary Cardoza, Florence Alves, Laura Machowski and Isabel Beaulieu.

Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 9 a.m. from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St., Warren, with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle, 500 Metacom Ave., Warren. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
