Fan Castleman Benjamin, 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Manor in Bristol. Born in Louisville, Ky., on Aug. 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late David and Marie (Sanford) Castleman.

Fan grew up in Louisville and graduated from Louisville Collegiate School in 1940. She attended Smith College but returned home to volunteer in a Louisville hospital during World War II. She graduated from the University of Louisville and completed her graduate studies in psychology at Columbia University.

For more than 30 years, Fan was a school psychologist in the public school system of Barrington, where she resided for over 50 years. She enjoyed many outdoor activities including tennis, golf and skiing — and most of all, a walk on the beach in Newport and Little Compton. She was an avid reader and a masterful crossword puzzle enthusiast.

Fan is survived by three sons (Gordon Benjamin III of Jamestown, David Benjamin and his wife Andrea of Windermere, Fla., and Lawrence Benjamin and his wife Margaret of Lake Forest, Ill.) and a daughter (Mary Wray and her husband Edward of Portsmouth). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial celebration of Fan's life, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be held on Wednesday, May 31 at 5 p.m. at Blithewold, 101 Ferry Road (Route 114), Bristol, RI.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to The Goosewing Beach Preserve c/o The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island, 159 Waterman Street, Providence, RI 02906.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
