In the Hampden Meadows neighborhood of Barrington sits an historic home known as "Grant House."
Built in 1840, the Cape Cod style house has been meticulously renovated since it was bought by high school sweethearts Al and Rachael Girard in 2007.
"We would drive by the house and my husband would say, 'We are going to live in that house some day,' and in 2007, it was for sale by owner," Mrs. Girard said. "It was practically a teardown, and we have spent the last eight years slowly making it into something we are very proud of."
Off the Market: Find out what your neighbor got for his house
With time and hard work, the couple has turned the 1,680 square-foot house at 487 Sowams Road into a completely up-to-date space, all while retaining the charm of an antique abode.
Some of the charming details include two staircases— one in the front of the house and the other in the rear. Along with high ceilings, the home features a double-sided central chimney, wood-burning fireplace. Among the updates are new windows, new electrical, plumbing and boiler system, new water heater and insulation. Recessed lighting and hardwood floors run throughout the home.
The pride and joy of the couple's hard work is the new chef's kitchen with custom cherry countertops, stainless steel appliances and white cabinets.
There are three bedrooms and two full bathrooms, all renovated. The master bedroom has a walk-in closet and built-ins. The other two bedrooms have original built-in storage areas — great for clothes, eliminating the need for bureaus to save space.
The spacious, unfinished basement gives additional storage and was recently painted.
The corner lot of more than 16,000 square feet is fenced in and has new landscaping with an outdoor patio and stone walkway to the driveway. A fully renovated, dry-walled detached garage could be great for a studio or office.
The home is available for the asking price of $429,000. For more information or to schedule a viewing, contact Lisa Schryver with Residential Properties at 401-529-5724.
