Two winters ago, the weight of heavy snow took out the roofs of two barns at Westport’s Ferry Farm.
The farmers rebuilt and were able to return to the dairy business.
Then Friday night, those barns burned to the ground and are both a total loss as is a smaller barn. The family did manage to save the cows — corralling them was a two-day effort — but lost equipment and supplies, says Westport detective Jeff Majewski.
The fire got its start in a small adjoining barn and quickly spread to the big barns — both measure about 75 feet by 100 feet. Investigators have not yet announced a cause.
The fire at the 735 Gifford Road Farm was reported at 10:15 p.m. Friday. There are no fire hydrants in the area so water had to be trucked in from all over. Some was pumped from the Head of Westport, other brought in from ponds by tanker trucks from Tiverton, Little Compton, Middletown, Dartmouth, Fall River and other departments
