First day busing hits a few bumps in Barrington

Bus mirror clips road sign, resulting in delays

Posted

Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore emailed parents Monday night regarding some issues with busing on the first day of school.

Mr. Messore wrote that one bus — Bus 7 — was involved in a minor traffic incident, which resulted in some delays.

"Bus 7 ran late this morning due to the bus’ mirror scrapping a road sign," wrote Mr. Messore. "Due to safety protocols at Ocean State Transportation, a new bus had to be dispatched to the location. The company is required to count the students on board and record the names."

In an earlier email, Mr. Messore explained how it is not uncommon for transportation delays to occur early in the school year.

"We had a good start with the opening of our schools. I realize that today our elementary students experienced significant delays with the afternoon bus ride home. At the beginning of each school year it is not uncommon for the district to experience delays due to students learning their bus numbers and routines. Any delay at one school results in delays across the district. This especially impacts Hampden Meadows’ bus schedule as they are the last scheduled school on the bus route," he wrote.

He said the schools are working to reduce the delays and he planned to meet with the transportation company to review bus routes and student schedules.

Mr. Messore said Ocean State Transit partners with SafeStop to offer a free mobile application which tracks school buses in real time. "The app features a real-time bus locator with a mapping screen, predictive arrival times and a messaging area to display service updates to let parents and students know where the bus is and when it will be at the designated stops," he wrote.
