FIsherman’s haul leads to class project in Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH — When fisherman and parent, Luke Wheeler, discovered close to 30 egg cases on his fish net, he knew just who to call: close friend and Portsmouth Middle School eighth-grade science teacher, Dana Reed.
Mrs. Reed’s science class is now nurturing some of the eggs in their fish tank at school and Save The Bay has the rest.
There are three different species of egg cases in the tank: chainlink dogfish and two different skate species. Students can see the embryos inside the egg cases by shining a light through them.
The egg cases can now be viewed at the Save The Bay Exploration Center & Aquarium, 175 Memorial Boulevard, Newport. The center uses video footage to keep the eighth-graders updated on the eggs’ progress.
