Former BHS standout earns college honor

Megan Verner-Crist wins scholar-athlete award

Barrington High School graduate and University of Chicago standout Megan Verner-Crist recently won the school's Mary Jean Mulvaney Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest junior and senior grade point average. 

Megan, a biological sciences and environmental studies major, has competed at a very high level while in college and became cross country captain her junior year and track captain her senior year.

Megan's college career highlights include:

2018

All-Region in the indoor one mile

All-UAA in the indoor one mile and outdoor 4x800-meter relay

UAA All-Academic Team

2017

NCAA qualifier in the indoor distance medley relay and the outdoor 1,500 meters

All-Region in the indoor distance medley relay and outdoor 1,500 meters

All-UAA in the outdoor 4x800-meter relay, indoor one mile, indoor distance medley relay and outdoor 1,500 meters

Posted the No. 4 time in school history in the outdoor 800 meters (2:15.64) and No. 4 in the outdoor 1,500 meters (4:32.73)

Led the team in the outdoor 1,500 meters

UAA All-Academic Team

2016

NCAA qualifier in the outdoor 1,500 meters

UAA Champion in the outdoor 4x800-meter relay and outdoor 1,500 meters

Set a new UAA and school record in the outdoor 4x800-meter relay (9:07.53)

Posted the No. 4 time in school history in the outdoor 1,500 meters (4:32.98)

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
