Free meals at school ending for some students this fall

Families can apply for free and reduced cost meals

Posted

For the last two years, students district-wide enjoyed free meals at school. But that will change this fall.

Barrington School officials emailed families earlier this month to alert them to the change.

“During the pandemic, the federal government allowed all students to receive free meals,” stated the email. “That waiver will end this fall. Families must now fill out the ‘Household Application for Free and Reduced-Price Meals’ in order to qualify for free or reduced breakfasts and lunches for the upcoming school year.”

School officials encouraged all families to complete and return the application to see if they qualify. Officials wrote that there is no risk in applying — it is fast, easy and confidential.

Families can find the application on the district’s website (www.barringtonschools.org) under the “Families” tab, and then click the “Lunch Program.” People can mail the completed form to: Barrington Public Schools, 283 County Road, Barrington RI 02806.

“In addition, you may also consider applying for SNAP, the federal nutrition program that provides eligible residents with monthly financial assistance to purchase groceries,” stated the district email. “The application for SNAP is available now and more information can be found at: https://healthyrhode.ri.gov/HIXWebI3/DisplayHomePage
