Born in Westport, son of the late Joquim and Maria (Mendes) Costa, he was a lifelong resident of Westport.

After attending local schools, he enlisted in the United States Air Force during World War II.  While on duty as a radio operator in Rome, Italy, he met his loving wife and married her there.  After his honorable discharge, he and Tina moved to Westport where they raised their four children.

George continued his studies at the Boston Technical Institute and graduated with a degree in radio and television engineering.  He worked as a radio DJ for local stations WSAR, WALE and WBSM and was employed for 19 years at WTEV 6 in New Bedford.

Upon his retirement in 1974, he proudly opened Westport Camping Grounds which he owned and managed for over 35 years and is still in operation today.  George also volunteered as a member of the Westport Finance Committee and the Board of Health.  He enjoyed gardening, fishing and bowling.

Including his wife, survivors include two sons, Alan Costa of Ecuador and Martin Costa of Westport; two daughters, Madeleine Costa of Westport and Lucetta Pinault of Westport; four grandchildren, David Pinault, Michelle Emory, Jillian Branco and Verity Stanford; a great grandson, John Pineault; and a nephew, Wayne Costa.

He was the brother of the late Frank V. Costa and Tony Costa.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
