George M. Tavares Jr., 72, of Bay Harbor Islands, Fla. and formerly of Warren, R.I., passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2017.

George was born on Dec. 4, 1944. He was the oldest son of the late George M. Tavares and Margaret Clark Tavares of Tavares Floors in Warren. He graduated from Villanova University and went on to earn his Juris Doctor Degree at New England School of Law. He continued his education by earning his Masters Degree in International Corporate Law at Thunderbird Graduate School of Global Management. For many years he enjoyed a successful career with CBS Records International in Intellectual Properties, and later opened his own law firm in Miami, Fla., where he focused on the music industry in Miami and around the world.

George served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He proudly served his country as a Green Beret in the Intelligence Corps and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone.

George is survived by his loving son, George III, and his loving step-daughter, Camilla, of Coral Gables, Fla.; his devoted sister, Kathleen Tavares Weinstein of Palm Beach, Fla.; his sister, Alex Lorber, her husband Jeffery, and their sons Ben and Zack of Johns Creek, Ga.; and his brother, Kenneth Tavares, his wife Mary and their children Michael, Sean and Meaghan of Cranston, R.I.

A memorial and burial will be held at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence, R.I. His family will celebrate his life privately in Rhode Island and a memorial Mass will be held shortly thereafter in Miami, Fla.

Arrangements are by Smith Funeral and Memorial Services.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
