Gerald Hennessy Schryver II, 86, of Newport, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. to Gerald Hennessy Schryver and Elizabeth Boyd Schryver. Married to Patricia Joy Sulzbach of Brooklyn, NY on Sept. 29, 1951. Survived by his sister, Judy Schryver McMahon, his 5 children: Lauren Kim Hughes, Michelle Schryver Suggs, Gerald “Jay” Schryver, Jon Schryver, Patricia Schryver, and 10 grandchildren.
Known to most as Gerry, he attended Bethany College, in West Virginia and graduated from Ohio State University in 1955. He started his sales career working for E.I. DuPont in Buffalo, NY and moved to Barrington in 1960. Gerry left DuPont and built his own, very successful, manufacturer’s representative business.
An avid skier, Gerry was a founding member of T.A.M.E which enabled 20 families to establish second homes in New Hampshire to ski at Waterville Valley. In addition to skiing, Gerry developed a love of sailing and was a very involved member of the Barrington Yacht Club and the New Bedford Yacht Club. He owned the 34-foot Morgan sloop, Yellow Bird, spending most summer weekends sailing among the islands off the coast of Massachusetts.
Gerry moved to Newport in 1985 and maintained a 29-foot Dyer motorboat called Interim. He enjoyed taking visiting children and grandchildren out to fish, swim and snorkel in the waters off Newport.
