Germina Elmana Tavares, 89, of Bristol

Germina Elmana (Almeida) Tavares, 89, of Vantage Point Drive and formerly of Doran Avenue, passed away at home on Dec. 28, 2018. She was the wife of the late Manuel Correia Tavares.

Born in Agua de Pau, São Miguel, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Virginio and Maria Germina (Resendes) Almeida. Germina is survived by her children, David Tavares and his wife Rose, and Maria Alice de Aguiar, both of Bristol; grandchildren Shawn Tavares, Monica Camara, Christopher Tavares, Emma de Aguiar, and Erin DeMedeiros; and great-grandchildren Charlotte Camara, Nora DeMedeiros, and Scarlet DeMedeiros. She was the dear sister of Virginio Almeida, Zulmira DeMello, and of the late Virginia Craveiro, Cecilia Almeida, David Almeida, Urbano de Almeida, and José Almeida.

Germina was educated in Portugal and after she emigrated to Bristol was employed at Converse Manufacturing for 20 years. She dedicated her life to providing every opportunity for her family. Her laugh was infectious and immediately recognized by her family and friends.

Above all, she will be remembered for her affection and tenderness toward her family, particularly, her grandchildren.

Her funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 3, at 8 a.m. from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Jan. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
