BARRINGTON—An Eastern Division regular season match highlighted by the league’s two perennial powers in Portsmouth and Barrington High School along with an upstart Middletown team took place Monday afternoon, May 8, at the Rhode Island Country Club.

And it was the host Eagles that came away from the contest with the far better score among the three sides as after the front nine holes Barrington stood firmly atop the leaderboard with a combined score of just 157. The Eagles remained unbeaten at 5-0 in the Eastern Division standings and kept pace with Bay View, which also entered the week with a 5-0 mark.

Middletown was next in with a 180, edging the Patriots by one shot. The split put the first blemish on the Islanders’ record as Middletown moved to 5-1 in league play. Portsmouth dropped to 3-4 in the standings and likely out of contention for the regular season title.

“They have been pretty consistent,” Barrington head coach Chris Lamb said of his Eagles. “They can get even better. We had two of our rivals today and we had space between our scores so I was happy with what they did.”

Barrington’s top four scores included Brendan Fay (2-over par, 38), Michael Grieve (39), Cole Kazounis (39) and Nick Bonneau (41). According to Coach Lamb, Kazounis has been his most consistent player so far this season.

Meanwhile, Middletown had the day's medallist as Jesse Boog shot a 1-over, 37 to pace the Islanders.

On the Portsmouth side, Shay Burnley carded a 41 followed by Mike Gabriel (43), Cormac Hayes (48) and Mike Occhi (49).

With Barrington and Portsmouth either winning or sharing the division crown for the last 17 years, it is the Eagles who remain on track to possibly keep the streak intact.

“Our kids played pretty good today. We don’t really gage our season on what happened today, but we were happy that we could put distance between us and those teams,” Coach Lamb said. "If we can get in those high 30s, that is when we are going to make a statement.”
