Harkins won’t seek recount in close Westport Board of Health race

Posted

WESTPORT — Bill Harkins said Thursday afternoon that he has decided not seek a recount of the close election race for Westport Board of Health.

The election night count had candidate Tanja Ryden winning the race by a tally of 880 to 862, a difference of 18 votes.

Mr. Harkins had been the board’s chairman.

His Thursday statement read:

After researching local and state regulations regarding election recounts, and after much thought and consideration, I have decided not to pursue a recount for the office of the Board of Health (BOH). The recommended state percentage for a recount is lower than the actual percentage of the final tally. The expense to the town in both money and manpower is more than I want to put the town through. The three years I served have gone by quickly. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with every member of the BOH, and the staff is the best, from the Director, Town Nurse, and Agents, to the Transfer Station personnel. I couldn’t have hoped for a better group of people to work with.

I congratulate Tanja Ryden for being elected and wish her the best of luck moving forward.

Sincerely

Bill Harkins
