Bus tours planned for Barrington neighborhoods

Posted

As part of the year-long celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of Barrington, Barrington 300 will hold its second Heritage Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9 and 10.

Three bus tours have been organized focusing on Barrington’s neighborhoods.

• Saturday, Sept. 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. — White Church, Old Barrington Village and the General Allin House: "The tour will focus on the oldest town center, with visits to the White Church (1806) and the General Allin House (ca. 1769)

• Saturday, Sept. 9, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. — Maple Avenue and Alfred Drown neighborhoods: "We will give a narrated tour of Maple Avenue, the heart of Barrington’s Italian American community since the later part of the 19th century and then on to Alfred Drowne neighborhood which began to flourish after 1850, with a visit to one of the older homes and a quick stop at one or two of the older churches."

• Sunday, Sept. 10: from 1 to 3:30 p.m. — Jenny’s Lane, Tyler Point and Hampden Meadows: "Jenny’s Lane is a National Register Historic District. We will stop at one of the gardens on Jenny’s Lane and explore the splendid homes of the post 1850 coastal residential neighborhood. Then we will go over to the Tyler Point Cemetery and learn about the early history of Barrington. If time allows we will head up through Hampden Meadows to Nockum Hill — one of the earliest areas of settlement in Barrington."

All bus tours will depart from the Barrington Town Hall.
