Herman Grabert Jr., 84, of Bristol

Herman Grabert Jr., 84, of Bristol died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, at home. He was the husband of Donna Lee (Remington) Grabert and also the late Joan (Acciardo) Grabert.

He was born in Bristol, a son of the late Herman and Mary (Goulart) Grabert Sr.

Herman was principal of the former Warren High School for more than 12 years before retiring in 1990.

Mr. Grabert was a U.S. Army veteran.

He had a Master’s degree in Education from Bridgewater State.

He had been a Bristol resident for more than 30 years after moving from Warren.

Herman was the Director of Religious Education for St. Mary of the Bay Church for more than 10 years.

He enjoyed playing golf, liked baseball and football and also played Triple A baseball for the St Louis Cardinals for two years.

He and his wife traveled all over the world, and also enjoyed spending time with family.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Brenda Baxter, and husband Daniel and their daughter Deanna of North Smithfield; and a brother, Bernard Grabert of Swansea, Mass. Herman was the grandfather of Joanna and Jeana Grabert. He was the brother of the late Vincent Grabert.

His funeral will be held Saturday Dec. 2, 2017, at 8:30 a.m. from SMITH FUNERAL & MEMORIAL SERVICES, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Bay Church, 645 Main St., Warren. Burial will follow in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Calling Hours are Friday, Dec. 1, from 4 to 8 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
