This month, the 154 historic property owners on our list have been sent order forms for a historic plaque. We have received around 25 orders from owners so far, and are looking forward to receiving more in the near future.

The Tiverton Historical Preservation Advisory Board publicized this program in October in the local papers as part of our charge per the Comprehensive Community Plan: educating the public of the town’s historic structures, documenting their history, and providing plaques for them.

The plaques are about nine inches tall by 12 inches wide, with black lettering on a white background, constructed of a maintenance-free Trex-type material. They will be pre-drilled and given to the property owner with appropriate mounting hardware and a brief summary of the history of the house taken from state and local sources. The plaque should be mounted on the front of the house so it is visible from the street. Ordered plaques should be ready in time for mounting this spring.

Any further questions pertaining to this project may be directed to the HPAB chair at 625-1352 or susan@tivertonhistorical.org.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
