Hugh B. Cameron, age 90, died on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, at Hope Hospice and Palliative Care in Providence.  He was the husband of Nancy (Harris) Cameron of Lincoln; son of the late Hugh F. Cameron and Alita (Bosworth) Cameron of Barrington; and brother of the late Janet Cameron Claflin of Nashua, NH. He is survived by his wife Nancy; son Peter Cameron and daughter-in-law Jennifer Cameron of Lincoln; son Christopher Cameron of Portland, Maine; daughter Amey Cameron of Upton, Mass.; and three grandchildren Anna Cameron, Joshua Cameron and Daniel Cameron…all dearly loved.

Hugh graduated from Barrington High School and Rhode Island State College (now the University of Rhode Island). He served his country in the United States Navy and is both a World War II and Korean War veteran.

For many years Hugh lived in South Portland, Maine serving as the branch manager of the Amica Insurance Portland, Maine office. While in Maine, the family belonged to the First Congregational Church in South Portland. As a member of the church, Hugh served in various positions: trustees, trustee chairman and president of the church.

Upon retiring from Amica in 1989, Nancy and Hugh moved to Marstons Mills on Cape Cod where they built their retirement home… living there until 2012. In that year they moved to Tiverton.

One of Hugh’s great loves was sailing. An avid sailor, Hugh sailed the waters of Narragansett Bay, Casco Bay and Nantucket Sound in a variety of sailboats. He was a sports enthusiast in general…running cross-country, track and playing basketball in high school then running cross country and track in college. In high school, the RI Coaches Association named him All State in the mile in 1944. While on his college track and cross country teams he helped to win the New England championships several times and ran in the IC4A Invitational Championship in New York for 3 years. Hugh ran the lead leg in the Penn Relays 4 mile relay in which his team placed second.

Calling hours will be held at the Smith-Mason Funeral Home, at 398 Willett Ave, Riverside, RI on Friday, Dec. 8, between the hours of 3 and 6 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Calvin Presbyterian Church located at 126 Angell Road in Cumberland, RI on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 9:30 a.m. Immediately following, the burial service will take place in the Forest Chapel Cemetery in Barrington.
