The Mt. Hope High School boy’s hockey team got its 2015-16 campaign off on a solid food Saturday night at Portsmouth Abbey, when the Huskies beat a formidable opponent, defending champion Johnston/North Providence, 4-2.
The action was fast and furious from the outset as both teams had opportunities on both ends of the ice. After Johnston/North
Providence took an early lead midway through the first period, the Huskies battled back to even the score. Freshman Cam Rancourt scored the equalizer, re-directing a blast from the blue-line off the stick of Junior defenseman Austin Hogan to make it a 1-1 tie heading into the second period.
The Huskies came out flying in the second. Senior defenseman and team captain Nate Cordeiro took a pass from Senior Jacob Calouro and uncorked a laser from the blue line that Rancourt deflected into the net, giving the Huskies a 2-1 advantage. Minutes later, Sophomore Ryan Cordeiro burst into the offensive zone and wristed a shot past the Johnston/North Providence goaltender to make it a 3-1 score. Off an offensive zone face-off, the Huskies continued the attack and Nate Cordeiro stepped in from the blue line and unleashed a shot that found the back of the net, increasing the lead to 4-1. Before the second period ended, Johnston/North Providence battled back to make the score 4-2.
Johnston/North Providence started the third period on fire, hoping to make a comeback. However, the story of the period for the Huskies was team play, defense and outstanding goaltending. The Huskies’ defensive corps played smart, tough hockey throughout and helped thwart the attack on several occasions. Between the pipes for the Huskies, Junior Goaltender Kyle Depoy made several key stops in critical moments, amassing a total of 35 saves, and backstopped the Huskies to an opening night win with the final score ending at 4-2 Mt. Hope win.
The next game is Friday night in Warwick and Saturday night in Woonsocket.
