Parents of Barrington students recently received letters detailing the results of the recent round of PARCC assessments … and the results were mixed.

At Hampden Meadows School, scores on the math portion of the test continued to rise. In the last three years, Hampden Meadows School students improved by 13 percent — 56.5 percent of students met or exceeded expectations in 2015, while nearly 70 percent met or exceeded expectations in 2017.

Nayatt School students saw a slight drop in math scores. About 75 percent of Nayatt students met or exceeded expectations in 2015, and nearly 85 hit that mark in 2016. But this year, 79.8 percent of Nayatt students met or exceeded the expectations.

Sowams School saw a similar trend in student scores. Nearly 61 percent of Sowams students met or exceeded expectations in 2015, and in 2016, that number rose to 73.5 percent. This year, the percent of students meeting or exceeding expectations fell to 69.

At Primrose Hill School, there has been a steady decline in math PARCC scores. In 2015, 63.4 percent of students met or exceeded expectations. That figure dropped to 62.4 percent in 2016 and fell again in 2017 to 53.8 percent.

Nearly 60 percent of Barrington Middle School students met or exceeded expectations in 2015, while 70.1 percent achieved the same level in 2016. This year, 63.5 percent of middle school students met or exceeded expectations.

At Barrington High School, 74.3 percent of students met or exceeded expectations on the PARCC math assessments. (Because of a change in required high school tests administered during 2017, multiple years of school data were not provided by the Rhode Island Department of Education.)

On average, Barrington students continued to score above the state average on the recent round of PARCC assessments.

On the English/language arts portion of the test, Barrington students scored 16-to-41 points better than the state average, while on the math portion of the test, local students scored 22-to-48 points better than the state average.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
