Rep. Knight aims to bring 'fairness and transparency' to grant application process

Posted

Representative Jason Knight (D-Dist. 67, Barrington and Warren) is having the Democratic Party's District Committee for District 67 evaluate applications for legislative grants.

Rep. Knight has supported eliminating legislative grants, but until that happens, he is working with the District Committee to ensure that the grant application process is fair and transparent.

"At this time, legislative grants are still a fact of life in Rhode Island, and our representative doesn’t want his district to forego the benefit to the community while they still exist," stated a press release from the District Committee.

"Mr. Knight intends his legislative grants to support the work of non-partisan non-profit organizations providing benefit to the community. He intends the grant to help kick-start good works without creating dependence, so organizations should not expect to receive a grant year after year."

The District Committee will evaluate each application and make recommendations to Rep. Knight. Anyone who wishes to apply for a legislative grant should sent a one- or two-page letter describing the request to Erin Schofield at schofieschoice@gmail.com by May 1.

Recipients of the last round of grants:

• Barrington Senior Center — $2,000

• Warren Armory — $2,000

• Warren Senior Center — $3,000

• Warren Association of Vietnam Vets — $2,000

• Arts Night Bristol — $1,000

• Community Scholarship Fund of Barrington — $1,000

• Warren American Legion Ladies Aux. Unit 11 — $1,000
