WESTPORT — F&R Auto, the Westport used car dealership that earned internet infamy for its video posting of a pizza delivery, has decided not to pursue a name change after all.

The dealership had approached the Board of Selectmen in early July seeking permission to change the name of the 1052 State Road business from F&R Auto Sales to King’s Auto Sales.

F&R owner Francis Correiro, wrote at the time that he wants the name change because of bad publicity (he did not elaborate nor did he return phone calls from Shorelines).

Selectmen had asked Mr. Correiro to meet with them again at last week’s meeting and also said they wanted to learn more about the status of police charges against the owner and an employee.

The dealership offered no explanation for deciding to drop its request.

F&R drew worldwide attention when an employee posted a video of staff members bullying a Dartmouth pizza delivery man over a tip.

The move backfired badly.  Although they quickly yanked the video, it was widely copied and posted on countless sites. Viewers blasted the dealership and its employees and also set up a fund for the delivery man that brought in around $30,000.

Several months ago, Westport Police charged Mr. Correiro, 49, of Assonet, and employee Mark Dambrosca, 47, of New Bedford with making threats to do bodily harm and witness intimidation after an investigation into complaints by a woman customer of the dealership. Both cases have been continued — Mr. Carreiro’s until August and Mr. Dambrosca’s until July.

Westport Police also said that the town’s Board of Selectmen have received several dozen complaints over the years.  On one occasion years ago the company’s license was suspended for 30 days for license violations.
