John Mendonca, 71, Tiverton

John Mendonca, 71, of Tiverton, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2018.  He was the husband of Laurie Jean (Sutter) Mendonca.  Born in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Catherine (O'Brien) and Al Mendonca. 

Prior to his retirement, he was a patrolman for the Tiverton Police Department.  He had served in the US Marine Corps and was a Vietnam veteran.  He was a member of the VFW Post 5392. 

In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Christy Amaral; a son, Ernie Mendonca; a stepdaughter, Heather Fowler; and a stepson, David Bickford.  He also leaves his former wife Sandra Mendonca.  He was predeceased by a sister Denise, and his late uncle Ernest Santos. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Potter Animal League, 87 Oliphant Lane, Middletown, RI. 02842.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
