John R. Mason Sr., 76, Bristol

John R. Mason Sr., 76, of Bristol, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of the late Irene (Lanoie) Mason.

Mr. Mason was born in Fall River, Ma., a son of the late Oliver Lewis Mason Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth (Wilbur) Mason. He worked for Coats and Clark Manufacturing and B.F.I for many years, and was a maintenance worker for Shaw’s Market in Barrington after he retired. He had served two years in the National Guard.

Mr. Mason was a Bristol resident for 36 years, coming from Swansea, and previously lived in Warren, where he lived most of his life. He was a parishioner of St. Jean the Baptiste Church, and was a former member of the Warren Rescue Squad. Mr. Mason enjoyed fishing with his son.

Mr. Mason leaves his son, John R. Mason Jr. of Bristol; and a brother, Edwin Mason of Avon, Ct. He was a brother of the late Oliver Lewis Mason Jr.

Mr. Mason’s funeral service will be held at 12 noon Tuesday, April 11, in Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren. Burial will follow in St. Jean the Baptiste Cemetery, Vernon Street, Warren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours are Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
