Jose Carvalho Borges, 92, of Bristol

Jose Carvalho Borges, 92, of Wood Street, Bristol, passed away on Friday, Nov. 24, 2017, at the Grace Barker Nursing Home. He was the husband of Hilda (Cabral) Borges. 

Born in Furnas, St. Miguel, Azores, he was the son of the late Antonio and Maria (Pacheco) Cabral.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Carlos Borges and his wife Mary C., Jose Borges and his wife Mary, Anna Costa and her husband Serafim, Laudelina Silva and her husband George, Lucia Simas and her husband John, James Borges, Mario Borges and his wife Mary Anne, Gualberto Borges and his partner Lori, and Zulmira Verissimo and her husband Paul. He was the brother of Pedro Borges and the late Miguel Borges, Carlos Borges, Gil Borges and Maria do Carmo Carvalho. He also leaves behind 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Borges was a landscaper for DaPonte Landscaping for 25 years before retiring. 

His funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m. from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian Burial, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bristol. Calling hours are Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
