Mr. Joseph A. Souto, Jr., age 77, of Lawn Street, Bristol, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Liduina (Travassos) Souto, his wife of 45 years.

Joseph A. Souto, Jr., 77, of Bristol

Mr. Joseph A. Souto, Jr., age 77, of Lawn Street, Bristol, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Liduina (Travassos) Souto, his wife of 45 years.

Born in Faial Island, Azores, the son of the late Joseph A. and Luisa (Leal) Souto, he was a resident of Bristol since coming from the Azores in May of 1972. He served in the Portuguese Army for five years during the war with Angola and Mozambique. Following the war, he worked on the Cahora Bassa Dam in Mozambique and served in the Merchant Marines.

In Bristol, he worked for Pearson Yachts for 11 years and then for the Furon Corp. and then Saint-Gorbain Corporation for 18 years, retiring in 2006. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Bristol, and a Eucharistic Minister at the church for a number of years. He was a member of the St. Elizabeth’s Band in Bristol and the Our Lady of Light Band in Fall River, Mass.

A former soccer player in his younger days, he enjoyed watching and following soccer. He loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling and taking cruises.

A self-taught carpenter, mason and general handyman, he loved puttering around his house, yard and gardens.

He is survived in addition to his wife, by four children, Lesley A. Guertin (Christopher) of Fall River, Mass., Karen E. Coelho (Christopher), Joseph A. Souto, III, both of Bristol, and Kaitlyn Mazzuchelli (Alexander) of Providence; four grandchildren, Jaymeson Souto, Klair Miner, Brennah Souto and Adriano Coelho; two great-grandchildren, Cecelia Rose Miner and Olive Souto-Santsaver; and two sisters, Luisa Souto and Eugenia Faria (Jose), both of Bristol.

Visitation in the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, will be Monday morning only, Dec. 10, 2018, from 9 to 10 a.m., with services from the funeral home at 10 a.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol.
