Joseph D. Cardoza, Jr., 84, of Bristol

Mr. Joseph D. Cardoza, Jr., age 84, of Prenda Lane, Bristol, died Saturday, April 14, 2018, in the Miriam Hospital, Providence.

He was the husband of Rene (Martin) Cardoza, his wife of 61 years. Born in Pawtucket, and raised in Rehoboth, Mass., he was a son of the late Joseph D. and Theresa (Paccotti) Cardoza, Sr.
A graduate of Case High School, Class of 1952 and he received his Associate’s Degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1958.

Joseph was the Plant Manager for Burtman Iron Works in Readville, Mass., for over 20 years, retiring in 1998. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bristol. An avid golfer, he was a member of the George Medeiros, Bill James and Tony Marabello Memorial Golf League at Middlebrook Country Club.

Joe enjoyed playing cards weekly with his buddies, walking, traveling, and most of all spending time with his family, especially time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived in addition to his wife, by two daughters, Debra L. Costa (Stephen) and Lisa J. Guercia (Nick), both of Bristol; four grandchildren, Kyle Costa (Lisa Mae) and Ryan Costa, both of Bristol, Nicole L. Guercia Bahrenburg (Karl) of Colchester, Vt., and Cassandra L. Guercia of Boston, Mass.,; four great-grandchildren, Gianna Castigliego, Cameron and Colton Costa and Olivia Nicole Bahrenburg; and a sister, Marilyn Henly of Rehoboth, Mass. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashley Lynn Costa.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours will be Friday, April 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
