Joseph M. Gonsalves, 95, Westport

Joseph M. Gonsalves, 95, of Westport, passed away on Friday, October 12, 2018, at Life Care Center of Stoneham. He was the husband of the late Evelyn E. (Gonsalves) Gonsalves.

Mr. Gonsalves was born  in Oakley, Calif., son of the late Manuel L. and Mary (Mello) Gonsalves.

A veteran of World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Navy. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a lab curator for the physics department at Boston University. He was a Mason at the Somerville Lodge A.F. and A.M., a member of the Holy Ghost Club, Westport and P.A.C.L., Westport. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport.

Survivors include his son, Joaquim "John" Gonsalves and his wife Carol of Woburn, Mass.; two grandchildren, Brian M. Gonsalves and Lisa Cunningham; a great granddaughter, Isabel E. Cunningham; along with several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service to which relatives and friends are invited will be Tuesday, October 16, at Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport at 11 a.m.

Calling hours are respectfully omitted.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
